Ashford University Invites You to Join Our England Tour

ENG/HIS 388: "Literary and Historical Developments in 19th Century England"
- Invite a guest to join you for the travel segment of the course; this travel opportunity is also open to Ashford alumni, faculty, staff and friends. Guests are not charged tuition.
Course Dates: May 11 - June 14, 2010
Course Description:
This Destination course explores 19th century British fiction and poetry and important historic developments that contributed to shaping these literary works. In addition to various historical readings and discussion of two novels, Bronte's Jane Eyre and Hardy's The Return of the Native, particular attention will be given to selected works of the Romantic poet William Wordsworth and the Victorian poet Robert Browning, as well as selected reading from Jane Austen and analysis of the movie based on her novel, Pride and Prejudice. An 11-day England Study Tour, which is part of the course, includes several days in London and visits to Grasmere, where Wordsworth wrote; Haworth, home of the Bronte sisters; Dorset, the setting of Hardy's novels, and Bath, a city associated with Jane Austen and her works. (Note: Students may receive course credit to meet the requirement for Ashford University's General Education requirements for Literature, Historical Perspectives, or Multicultural Awareness.)
Course Outcomes/Objectives:
Students will be able to:
- Summarize and explain distinguishing characteristics and major themes of the Romantic and Victorian literary periods;
- Describe and analyze the ways that particular literary forms, themes, and characterization in the selected literary works contribute to the works' effectiveness;
- Identify outstanding aspects of the literary styles of the authors studied;
- Explain how particular relationships, conflicts, and outcomes in the selected works reflect diverse patterns, conditions, and values in 19th century British culture;
- Create mature written work that analyzes important aspects of the selected works, demonstrating critical thinking, use of historical perspective, and research methodologies;
- Develop a set of informed personal observations and reflections about the selected works, and identify ideas applicable to refining an individual world view.

Tour Itinerary:
Our tour connects you to contemporary culture in London—but also gives you an unusual opportunity to explore historic sites,
see urban and rural environments in other parts of England, and engage ideas that influenced past English thought and culture.

- Overnight flight from Chicago to Manchester
- Luxury coach from Manchester airport to the beautiful Lake District in Northwest England
- Sightseeing in the Lake District, including visit to Wordsworth's home and school
- Travel southeastward by coach to Howarth, the village nestled in the moors of West Yorkshire, where Emily and Charlotte Brontë lived and wrote.
- A morning visit to an Industrial Museum in Sheffield, then travel by coach through the Midlands to Stratford-upon-Avon where Shakespeare spent his early life.
- Coach travel south to Dorset into the countryside where Thomas Hardy lived and imagined Egdon Heath as a setting for some of his novels. This stop includes a hike into the heath to settings described in The Return of the Native.
- Coach travel to historic Stonehenge, then to Bath, where visits will include the Jane Austen Center.
- After sightseeing at Windsor Castle, arrival in London for three days' immersion in historic site visits, entertainment, and shopping.
- Flight from London's Heathrow Airport back to Chicago at noon.

Your England Tour includes:
- Roundtrip coach-class airfare and luxury coach land transportation;
- Accommodation in 3- and 4-star hotels (Single or Double occupancy available);
- All breakfast meals; six lunches and nine dinners;
- Admissions to Dove Cottage, Wordsworth School, Howarth Parsonage, Kelham Island Museum, Hardy's House, Stonehenge, Jane Austen Centre, and Windsor Castle;
- Three-day London Tube Pass; and
- Transportation from London hotel for departure from Heathrow Airport.

- Participation is limited to 40 individuals, and must be confirmed with payment of $100 by March 17, 2010.
- Spaces in the Study Tour that are not reserved by students by March 17, 2010 will be offered to Ashford alumni, University personnel and friends.
- Payment:
- March 17: $100 initial deposit
- March 30: $1,590 (minus $100 deposit) for hotel, meals, and UK transportation
- April 2: $689 for airfare
