Marcus Hillman

Learning & Development Manager

What is it like to work at Ashford University?

I love it - it's a great opportunity to really see that what I do every day actually changes people's lives. Many people are scared when they start a new job and I get a chance to show them how they can be successful. There are times when people struggle and we get a chance to talk for just a few minutes about it. Then I see them in the halls a few weeks later and I get to hear how they were able to make small changes that really helped.

Tell a story of a significant impact you have made on an Ashford University student's life?

I had a student who was paralyzed from the chest down. He was unable to leave the nursing home he was in, but he wanted to get his degree so he could help people. He was able to take classes online to help realize his dream.

What do you appreciate most about your co-workers?

They all give 100%. Training is a very difficult job and really takes a lot out of you. Everyone sees us on the floor and thinks that training looks like so much fun. Don't get me wrong, it is a lot of fun, but it is also a lot of work.

What makes you excited to come to work each day?

I love the opportunity to train people on ways to help others with to get an educational that the student may have not thought was possible. I also love talking to advisors and helping them realize that one little thing that makes them better at what they do.

How would you describe your experience as an Ashford University employee?

I actually started off slow, but my manager and co-workers were very supportive. They believed that I could do it and helped me along the way. Now I am doing great and helping my teammates to do the same.
